FBI Investigates Dark Web Sale of One Hundred and Fifty Three Million Driving Licences
The FBI has opened an investigation into a dark web service called Nexus that claimed to be selling digital scans of more than one hundred and fifty three million driving licences belonging to people in the United States and Canada, alongside millions of identification cards, travel documents and medical cards. Investigative journalist Brian Krebs, who first uncovered the service, traced the data back to an identity verification company used by a major car rental firm, and confirmed that documents belonging to the US Defense Secretary were among those offered for sale.
The service went offline shortly after Krebs published his findings, though security researchers warn the data is likely to resurface elsewhere. Adobe Rushes Emergency Fix for Maximum Severity Flaw in Online Shopping Software
Adobe has issued an emergency patch for a maximum severity security flaw in Magento and Adobe Commerce, the software that powers a large share of the world's online shops, after researchers found attackers exploiting the vulnerability to plant hidden backdoors on victims' websites without needing a password. The flaw, nicknamed StyleSmuggler, allowed attackers to run their own code on a vulnerable store simply by tricking it into processing a booby trapped file, and was already being used in real attacks for three days before the fix became available.
Security researchers found the technique being used to install both a disguised Linux backdoor and a separate hidden web shell that gave attackers ongoing access to compromised stores. Because the attacks began before any patch or detection tool existed, Adobe is advising every affected retailer to check their systems for signs of compromise even after installing the update, rather than assuming that patching alone has made them safe.
